Nexus 5

Now that the dust has settled and people are starting to spend some quality time with the Nexus 5, lets see how it stacks up so far in everyday use.

When you first pick up the Nexus 5, you’ll notice just how light it is, especially for a phone with a 5-inch display. At only 130 grams the Nexus 5 is a lot easier to hold for long periods of time just because of the lack of weight.

Although its not as good to look at as its predecessor, the Nexus 5 is far more comfortable to hold in the hand. The soft-touch plastic on the rear provides a nice grip that never gives you the feeling the phone will slip out your hands without warning.

As with any current phone you’ll spend all your time looking at the display and the display on the new Nexus phone doesn’t disappoint. It’s a 5-inch, 1080p, IPS display and is easily one of the best around. Colours are pretty accurate and not over blown like the AMOLED panels Samsung use, contrast is also pretty decent, my only complaint would be its doesn’t get incredible bright but that’s one minor gripe in a otherwise nice display.

Arguable what people are most interested in from a new Nexus device is the software. The Nexus 5 comes running Android 4.4 KitKat.The general feel and how the stock OS works is mostly unchanged, but the look is different from 4.3 to 4.4. The first thing that grabs your attention is the size of the icons. The icons have been enlarged in the app drawer and on the home screens making them stand out a lot more. The on-screen navigation buttons have become transparent so now you no longer get a black bar at the bottom of the screen.

Battery life was a sore point for Nexus 4 owners who would see their battery drain before their eyes. So far the 2300mAH battery holds up a lot better and should be able to get you through a work day fine.

All in all the Nexus 5 is a good upgrade from a Nexus 4 or even an S4 or a HTC One but for more details on Google’s latest flagship read my review that’s landing in the coming days.
